New Theme Song and Some Articles

On a completely seperate and unrelated note, here’s the latest installment for the dating column I’ve been writing for the university paper. The topic is on being a good wingman… or not being a crappy wingman. I can’t decide which. Also, something cool that happened to me this weekend. Details on the award this weekend are in the works.

Prince Can Actually Play Guitar…

If you have ever discredited Prince (or the Artist Formerly Known As Prince) as a musician, putting him firmly in the weirdy department, I allow you this opportunity to repent.

I thought he sucked for a long time until I saw this video. He just chills in the background for a good 3 minutes… but at the halfway mark, he unleashes his fury upon the helpless strings upon his guitar. You’d think he had something to prove. (He was pretty upset when he didn’t make the Rolling Stone’s list of top 100 Guitar Players of All Time.)

I am an internet junkie. Most of you know this. Very rarely does somebody (with the exception of a small handful of people on my Google RSS Feed Reader) show me a video on Youtube, a cool website, or revolutionary blog post without my having already read it… sometimes months earlier.

One of my most recent discoveries absolutely blew me away. Pogo is a breakout electronic artist from Perth, Australia. In the video below, he has taken sound bits and sweet beats from the movie Disney’s Mary Poppins and mixed them into a soothing yet very catchy tune. His talent isn’t limited to audio editing, however. If you watch the video, you will note that nearly every image is in complete harmony with the steady thump of the electro-bass. The dancing, the singing, everything is in sync.

The time that was put into the editing of the video and audio of this production has to be unimaginable, but it’s worth every delicious second.

The ability to take something ordinary, or even extraordinary and turn it into something that is yours, something that is unique is something I admire greatly. There is an entire world of plain, average, mediocre, vanilla things out there. We are surrounded by the bland and common. Every so often, someone takes a piece of the average and creates something unbelievable out of it. When will that person be you?

If you like the Mary Poppins video, he has a few others based on Disney and Harry Potter movies that are just as phenomenal as this one. His music is also up for free download (by the artist, so it’s legal) here.

Design Class

The first big assignment in my design class was due a few weeks ago.Â It was my first time using Adobe Illustrator, and the task was to make a poster for an event using an Art Deco style. I chose to make a poster for one of my favorite local bands, Chris Merritt.Â I love his music, and I’ve probably seen him in concert at least 10 times over the past few years.

On a whim, I sent him an e-mail with the poster attached to get his opinion. He liked it and asked me if he could use it for his next concert. I obliged… and so it shall be. Here it is (feel free to critique it… I like constructive criticism):

Vanilla Hammer, Bringin’ Back That Which Sucketh

The MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice concert was tonight. I didn’t go. To be honest, I didn’t want to go. Some may think I’m all sorts of crazy for not attending, but really, I think I’m genius.Â I mean, the two of them together barely have as much talent as a half eaten Oreo.Â As a matter of fact, given a choice between the two (Vanilla Hammer and an Oreo) I’d pick the Oreo.

For some reason, the latest trends in our society are based off of resurrecting the trends that we wish had never happened over the past decade.Â Stretch pants, the color ‘hot pink’ (trust me, there’s nothing hot about it) economic recession, and the Ninja Rap.

Why are we doing this to ourselves?Â Can’t we as a nation just leave the skeletons of bad decisions past rot in the closet?Â The Germans don’t reenact WWII to remind us of what a stupid idea it was. The Brits aren’t trying to resurrect the trend called slavery. Why do we insist on digging up the one decade that should have been buried, then had cement poured on it, then placed in a large box, then dropped into the ocean, then blown up?

Hammer pants were never cool.

Huge teased bangs and leggings were never hot.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is dumb, in denial, or one of those lousy opinionless people who follows trends for no other reason than because someone else is doing it.

So, to make up for my missing out on an evening full of audio-torture by washed up has-beens who never were, I give you this tender reminder to respect your mother, respect Mr. T, and to, “Be somebody!”

Chris Hooley is my hero. He is the holy father of the internet.
